Crumbwise · sourdough starter tracker, bake planner and baking library
Privacy policy
Last updated 27 October 2026
Crumbwise is built to help you bake, not to collect data about you. There are no ads, no analytics, no tracking and no data sales. This policy explains exactly what we store, why, and how you delete it.
Without an account
You can browse the formula library, technique guides and troubleshooter, use the baker's calculator and read a recipe from a photo without an account. Nothing about you is stored on our server when you do. The library is cached on your device so it works offline.
With an account
An account lets your starters, bakes and journal sync between your devices. We store:
| Data | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Email address | Signing in, password-reset codes, a notice if your email changes | Until you delete your account |
| Display name | Greeting in the app; shown on bake plans you choose to share | Until you delete your account |
| Password | Signing in — we store only a one-way hash, never the password itself | Until you change it or delete your account |
| Your starters, feedings, bakes, custom formulas and discard log, including notes, kitchen temperature and time zone | The app's features and syncing them between your devices | Until you delete them or your account |
| Photos you add (your starter jar, crumb and crust shots) | Shown in your feeding log and journal; on a shared bake plan only if you share that bake | Until you delete them or your account |
| Share links you create | Letting friends see one bake plan | Until you stop sharing or delete your account |
| A random device identifier and session tokens (stored as hashes) | Keeping you signed in on each device | Up to 30 days; removed when you sign out or delete your account |
| Server logs: IP address, request, time | Security and preventing abuse | 14 days |
What stays on your device
- Recipe pages you scan or photograph to import a formula are read on your device (Apple's Vision text recognition) and are never uploaded.
- On devices with Apple Intelligence, the short comparison of your bakes and the recipe structuring run on the device with Apple's on-device model. Nothing is sent to us or to any AI service.
- Reminders are local notifications scheduled on your device.
Camera and photos
Crumbwise asks for the camera only when you choose to photograph your starter jar, your loaf or a cookbook page. You can always pick a photo from your library instead, or skip photos entirely.
Who else sees your data
No one, unless you share a bake plan. A shared plan shows that bake's timeline, ingredients, your display name and its crumb photo to anyone with the link, until you stop sharing. We use an email delivery provider only to send password-reset codes and email-change notices; it receives your email address and the message. We do not sell or share data with advertisers, data brokers or anyone else. There are no third-party SDKs in the app.
Deleting your account
In the app: Account → Delete account, then confirm twice. Your account, every starter, feeding, bake, formula, photo and share link are deleted from our server immediately, and the app removes its local copy. Backups roll over within 14 days, after which no copy remains. You can also delete single feedings, bakes or photos at any time.
Children
Crumbwise is a general-audience baking app and is not directed at children under 13.
Your rights
You can see and correct your data in the app, export it by contacting us, and delete it at any time. If you live in the EU, UK or California you have the rights given by GDPR, UK GDPR and CCPA; we honour them for everyone.
